Crowns (commonly known as caps) are dental restorations which are used to restore and strengthen teeth that have become damaged or weakened by decay or a very large filling.
Crowns fit over the remaining part of a prepared tooth to make it strong and give it the shape of a natural tooth.
They are usually made of porcelain or gold or a combination of these materials. Crowns are a very effective means of bolstering individual teeth and revitalising the aesthetics of the smile. The procedure is simple and safe and the results are consistently impressive.
A dental crown could be used for a number of other reasons, for instance:
- You may have discoloured fillings and would like to improve the appearance of the tooth.
- You may have had a root filling which will need a crown to protect it.
- It may help hold a bridge or denture firmly in place.
