Our Dental nurse Dannielle shares her top 5 tips to creating good oral hygiene habits.

1. When introducing something new, find a time that works for you

After having my little boy my oral hygiene routine had admittedly been thrown out the window. What worked for me before didn’t necessarily work for me in the same way.

By changing things up to fit in with my new routine, and finding a way I could consistently keep it up, the habit has stuck.

For example; I floss my teeth whilst my little boy is playing in the bath. It’s a routine that we do every single day. The floss is kept in the bathroom, its not only convenient for me to do it then, but its also a reminder.

2. Treat yourself to nice products that you enjoy using

For me personally I much prefer using the OralB Satin tape to floss my teeth. It’s not the cheapest one available on the market, but I really do not enjoy using anything else, to the point, I will avoid doing it.

This could also be a certain toothpaste, type of interdental brush, mouthwash etc. If you enjoy using something you are more likely to consistently use it.

3. Setting reminders for your toothbrush(head)

By marking on my calendar and setting my self a clear reminder, I ensure that I am changing my toothbrush head on a regular basis.

This is important to my oral hygiene routine for a number of reasons;

a. I am not brushing my teeth with a ‘in-effective’ brush head that has lost its shape

b. I am not introducing unnecessary bacteria into my mouth

4. Having ‘dental goals’ to keep me motivated

There are a few dental goals that I have either ticked off my list or I am in the process of doing so.

The first one was to have Teeth Whitening. I started professional teeth whitening around 7 years ago. Even the short ‘top-up’ sessions that I now do twice yearly help keep me motivated to look after my teeth.

I am also about to start my Invisalign treatment. This is a treatment that I have wanted for years – So I am very excited to get started!

5. Staying consistent with my dental check-ups and dental hygiene appointments

Regularly checking in with your dentist and dental hygienist can work wonders keeping you motivated with your oral hygiene routine

Something like a membership plan can work really well by keeping you organised as well as saving you money in the long run.
