Our lovely hygienist Zoe shares her top 4 tips for getting your oral hygiene back on track.

Zoe joined our practice on a permanent basis in January 2021, after covering various dates throughout 2020. We are so lucky to have her join our growing team!

During the past year in particular, with many people working from home during the pandemic, we noticed a difference in a lot of our patients oral hygiene.

The loss of routine of going in to work every day often led to the loss in oral hygiene routine. But it’s not too late to get back on track!

1. Use an Electric toothbrush

Whether you’re yet to purchase one, or you have just broken the habit (perhaps it ran out of battery and you just didn’t get round to charging it up?). An electric toothbrush really does make a difference.

We really recommend the Oral B electric toothbrush range. Anything around the £40 mark and upwards is great if you can!

Tip: Shop the offers! Boots and Amazon always have some great offers running.

2. Brush twice per day for 2 minutes…Everyday

Its sounds simple, but many people are not consistent with brushing twice per day. Sometimes it may be that you are not brushing long enough.

Many electric toothbrushes now have a timer setting built in to make it really easy to know when you have done your 2 minutes.

If your toothbrush does not have this setting, most smart phones also have a really simple stop watch setting. A little egg timer is also a great option, particularly if you have children as it’s really quick and easy to use.

3. Use Floss or Inter-dental products once per day

Create a habit that works for you. If you have more time in the morning, do it then, if not, perhaps before you go to bed. If you can’t make that work (perhaps you get too tired and forget) could it work after lunch?

Everyone is different, the same as everyone’s oral hygiene routine is different, so find a time that works for you.

4. Have treats at meal times

It’s far too easy for us to say ‘don’t eat sugary treats full stop’, but it;’s not realistic.

Of course we encourage our patients to make healthier swaps as much as possible, but when you do want to treat yourself, try having your sugary treat at your meal time (after your meal) as you would a dessert in a restaurant.

For bonus points, brush your teeth afterwards as well.
